Task 1:  Empathy Map and Problem Statement

Instructions:

Week 1:

For our task 1, we need to form a group of 5 to redesign a tabletop game from our client and pay attention to the brief that we needs to be done to create a design that fit the user experience and outcome of the board game.

We have two choices of types of board game to design. Gluconomy is similar to Monopoly where we use Glucose to convert currency with the use of basics of economy such as investment and stock market etc. Or, Sugar High is a strategic card game based on survival being collecting more points based on the cards.

For our group, we ended up choosing The Gluconomy, and immediately discussed about the game mechanics and strategy to attract our target users. The game included references of game pieces and manual below:

Instruction Manual

Glucose Token

Power cards / ATP Currency

Meme references to add to the game's Humor

Week 4:

To understand our target audience's preference and behavior towards board games, we come up with numerous questions that is suitable for our goal during the interview.

Questions For Interview :

Background
1. Have you played any forms of board game?
2. What kind of board games do you usually play/are interested in?
3. What’s your favorite board game of all time?
4. What if we made a game related to Bioscience, would you be interested to learn/play?

Questions About The Game
1. Do you understand what the instruction of the game is?
2. Do you think the designs of the game helps you understand the game?
3. Would you think having better design will attract you or more players to play the games?

Closing Question
1. Do you prefer a more strategic or luck base board game?
2. Do you think this board game can educate children?
3. What makes you come back for a board game?

After that, we found 3 people for our qualitative interview and gather as much info as possible and they are in-depth enough to make a starting point to gather data in the empathy map and user persona.

Week 5:

Final Presentation for Empathy Mapping and User Persona

Feedback:

Week 3 : Work on color palettes and art direction. Don't go too far on the design yet.

Week 4 : The idea and theme is good but keep working on it for now, For the full board game, it doesn't need to be a full board but must at the very least cover everything about it.

Week 5 (After Presentation) : The target audience can be finalized from aged 18-21. The user persona from the 3 interviews can really help to utilize their preference and throughts to the design progress at the fullest. Need to find a balance between the bioscience part as well as the economy part though.

Reflection:

I was primarily responsible for completing the moodboard, finalizing the interview questions, and providing the overall art direction for this project. At the same time, I wanted to ensure that everyone on the team shared a clear understanding of our goals. Although progress started off a little slow, it was a necessary stage for aligning our ideas and clarifying the creative direction. As discussions continued, the team gradually developed a stronger grasp of the board game’s vision. Once everyone was on the same page, the workflow became much smoother, allowing the project to move forward effectively and cohesively.
