1. FORMATS


INTRODUCTION: 

There are many publications that fall under the term publishing (Newspaper, Magazine etc.), books are one of the most influential and the most important formats, due to its historical significance of being the oldest form of publication, and being a flexible medium to document and transmit, ideas, knowledge, records, history etc.

Designing a book requires a comprehensive understanding of typography, a good sense of space, an eye for detail and a good understanding of publishing software. 


HISTORIC FORMAT: 

1. Iran - Iraq = Mesopotamian Civilization

2. Egypt = Ancient Egyptian Civilization

3. India - Pakistan - Afghanistan = Indus Valley Civilization 

4. China = Han Chinese Civilization

5. Europe (Turkey & Beyond) = European Civilization


INSTRUCTIONS:




TASK 1: EXERCISES 


Throughout the beginning and the middle of the semester, exercises will be prescribed at various phases of the module. The exercises are as follows: 

1. Mock-up Making 


Result: Bigger than A5 and smaller than A4, which results the size of 240mm (HEIGHT) x 180MM (WIDTH)


2. Signature Folding Systems (8 + 8 = 16)

Lecturer highlighted the issues involve the book pages above:

1. Font size is inconsistent, suggesting that subheading is 15-18 pt and body text is 10-12 pt.

2. Borders provided consistently in the pages are not necessary and it's better to leave the page be. 

3. Must have only 1 consistent paragraph formatting in body text.

FEEDBACK:

WEEK 12: 
Print is unsatisfactory, need to redo the print by:
- Use Flowing Text
- No one word at the end of paragraph.
- Text should not at the edge of the book.
- No hyphens

WEEK 11:

Watch for font size, widowing for each page.

WEEK 9:
Use Bleed and Slug in Indesign to adjust the cover front and back page.

WEEK 7:
Submit Task 1-2 on E-Portfolio by Week 9

Deteremining typography for our books are important, whether it's typeface, alignment, and kerning etc.
