Exercises:
For this group exercise, we needed to select a creative company that aligns with our specialization, We then present a cohesive company profile addressing four sections:
- Business & Industry Overview
- Production Structure & Pipeline
- How Art Direction Fits Within the Production
- Art Director Profile: Roles & Scope
With how our group has a mix of specializations, and the fact we share similar interests of gaming, we just decided to go for a game studio as it is something we would like to explore. While contacting them to learn more from the industry seems exciting on paper, it wasn't easy. We went through many companies, contacted them and just waited. Some didn't get back to us, while others rejected us. This struggle went on for 3-4 weeks. Below is a screenshot of the rejections from Bandai Namco, WHY kNOT studio and Larian Studios.
History of Rejections From Companies
Luckily, at the very least, we have a backup plan thanks to our lecturer, Mr Kamal, who had a friend that happens to work for a animation/game studio called Momodica. So we shot a few emails at them and soon enough we got a reply.
Due to Jun Ning busy circumstances, he can only answer our questions through document instead of online interview. That being said, I think this is a very insightful response from the team, especially the part where they describe the skills and mindset to enter the industry, given today. Which is why I'm very interested in writing about their business and industry overview.

Reflection:
Overall, this exercise is more tedious than being "hard, but I did learn something in the end and I think that paid off. Firstly it's to deal with rejection. This is a skill that I need in a long run, as this is a realistic approach in job application, where we all get rejected time and time again. There's really no answers why we get rejected. It's just what it is, but that doesn't stop us from getting over it, and improve what's being done. I'd say that's a progress.
I've learnt so much from Jun Ning and Momodica, based on what they've answered in the interview. Again, Gen-Z's priority shift from the older generations and the rise of social media does change everyone's point of view on design and art industry as if it's everyone's ideal dream job, when in reality the creative production and progress can be quite damning and demanding. The job of being an art director need to managing in every scenario - budgeting, time, progress etc.
It doesn't change my optimism to work on the industry, but I am getting more cautious after this interview. Given our choice to work on this industry, we must prepare and face what's kind of ups and downs the reality throw at us. Either way, I hope what we've learnt on our way is a valuable experience, just like Jun Ning and Momodica wrote.
